Theatre Sports

9th Jan - 13th March 2023

What is 'Theatre Sports'?

Theatre Sports is a fantastic acting experience. It is funny, fast paced, and requires thinking on your feet. Theatre Sports is a variety of games played in an improvised manner, without any planning. In most cases it is performed interactively in front of a live audience.

Where have I seen it before or where could I see an example?

A well-known TV show called 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' It is an improvised game show that plays a variety of Theatre Sports games.

A variety of video clips can be found on Youtube, in regard to the TV Show and also types of Theatre Sports games you can play. There are also many Theatre Sports Improv groups you can sign up to around NZ and watch live. It is a popular and entertaining hobby.

In school, there is also a Waikato Theatre Sports competition that any high school in the Waikato/Waipa region(s) can compete in. You can enrol a junior team (year 9-10) and/or senior team (year 11-13) when competing. A live finalist show is available for public viewing towards the end of each year.

How do you play Theatre Sports?

The host will usually pull a game out of the hat for the actors to play. The actors will work together to create a light-hearted moment or scene with the intent of making people laugh. Each scene is anywhere between 10 seconds and 2 minutes in length. You can either participate on your own or in groups of four.

Who has sponsored this community experience?

We are very lucky to have been awarded funding from the 'Waipa Creative Community Scheme', which is from the Waipa District Council. If you'd like to know more about this scheme, you can find more information by clicking here.
