LITTLE THINGS GO A LONG WAY IN EDUCATION
I make these carp for kids all the time. It is one of the only thing I learned in Japanese at school. For some reason, I couldn't retain learning a language in my pre-teens. I like to give them to kids when they need a smile. I'm currently networking with HGHS. One of the girls at HGHS needed a smile so I wrote this little message on it and gave it to her.
It only takes a moment to change someone's day, in a good or bad way. I choose manaakitanga.

Trigger warning: Suicide
I continue to make these origami fish for students that are a little glum in class. I say to them "who needs a bit of luck today?" and while they are doing their work, I sit their quietly and make them a fish. They leave class with a smile and I know just that small interaction where they get to feel seen and heard, brightens their day. I always treat each day with students like it could be their last. Because sometimes it could be their intention and sometimes our little acts of kindness allows them to live through another day.
