In the meantime, here's a quick look at what the exam is all about and what you need to do to achieve excellence.

What is the Unfamiliar Text exam?
It is an NCEA exam that is designed to get you to showcase your analysing skills.
"Unfamiliar" means not studied, so you will be given various texts that you haven't studied in the classroom.
"Text" means poems, articles, non-fiction, prose, advertisements.
You will need to analyse the text, which you should discuss the following things:
Punctuation, structure, language features like similes, metaphors, repetition and WHAT THEY MEAN.
What do I need to do to get excellence in the Unfamiliar text exam?
You need to discuss what the writer wants the reader to know and feel. After you identify this, you will need to use examples to back up what you are talking about from the text and the wider world.
In other words, you need to know what the text is about and how the writer has communicated it.
Adding sophisticated language, a perceptive viewpoint and understanding of writing intentions/purposes/perspectives with solid evidence from the text you are analysing will help strengthen your answers.
You can also view NCEA marking schedules on the NZQA website to see what the markers will be looking for.
