How to prepare for NCEA exams!

Preparing for NCEA exams can be a stressful time for many students. However, with the right mindset and preparation, you can succeed in achieving your desired results. Here are some helpful tips to help you sit your NCEA exams with confidence.

Having a reliable plan will distribute your subjects evenly for your NCEA exams.

Create an NCEA study plan.

It is important to create an NCEA study plan. This will help you to stay organised and ensure that you cover all the necessary topics within your NCEA exams. Be sure to allocate sufficient time for each NCEA subject and prioritise areas where you need more practice. By providing yourself with regular study times, you can keep the important information present in your mind and practice how you will explain your answers on paper.

Cramming is like holding many bowling balls. You may end up getting to a point where they all fall out of your arms and roll away.

Practise answering old NCEA exam questions will make sure you are familiar with the NCEA exams.

Practice past NCEA exam papers.

A technique I used often in my tutoring sessions, is revisiting former practice papers and practising answers the questions. It is likely that similar questions will present themselves in the exams, so practising will help you get used to answering questions relevant to the topics you are learning in your class. Practicing past NCEA exam papers will also help you to become familiar with the exam format. The more you become familiar with the NCEA exam papers, the likely you will feel comfortable sitting the NCEA exams.

You can find past papers on the NZQA website or sometimes your school may have copies available.

Learn the concepts rather than minor information.

I made this mistake when I was in high school. I used to remember all the nitty gritty things like when Shakespeare died and when WW2 happened, and although these are important components, it is particularly important to understand the concepts. In other words, you may need to know how to discuss characters within a Shakespearean play for the NCEA Drama theatre form exams.

If you focus on understanding the concepts rather than memorizing information, it will help you to apply your knowledge to different scenarios and questions. If there are areas where you are struggling, it is important to know that all of our tutors at Tovah's Tutoring Company Ltd are confident with NCEA and we can support you with your NCEA exam practices.

Take care of yourself while you undergo NCEA exam prep.

Above all, make sure you take care of yourself during this time. Get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks when you need them. A good breakfast and a good amount of water goes a long way. This will help you to stay focused and perform at your best. Same applies with sleep. Staying up studying all night will mean you will not be as present as you could be after a decent rest. Sleep also helps people to retain memories, and if you deprive yourself of sleep, you will deprive yourself from retaining key exam notes too.
