Hello NCEA student! You've made it to your senior years at high school - Congrats! It's great to see you looking for a head's up on your NCEA English assessments! – I have great news, you've come to the right person, because I'm an NCEA English expert!

Making meaning through personal response will require NCEA students to develop an opinion and back it up with evidence from the text.
A brief introduction about me and Tovah's Tutoring Company Ltd.
Here's another brief introduction about my business and who I am. Tovah's Tutoring Company Ltd has been tutoring New Zealand high school learners since February 2022. My team and I are qualified and experienced teachers, in NCEA English, NCEA Physics, NCEA Chemistry, NCEA Drama and NCEA Dance. We have been "in the teaching game" for many years and have had leadership roles in our retrospective schools, so when I mean that we are experts, I meant it! For me, I have been teaching for over 12 years and have taught NCEA English, NCEA Drama and/or NCEA Dance in a variety of Waikato/Waipa/Auckland high schools.
So, I can say with confidence that I am an expert in these subjects and know the ins and outs of each NCEA assessment.
Here is the NCEA English assessment I will be covering in this blog:
#1: NCEA ENGLISH Personal Response
This assessment requires NCEA students to submit a variety of formal critical opinions as a response to reading or viewing text. Over the year, each NCEA student will read and view a variety of NCEA approved materials as well as selecting their own novels to read for personal viewing.
Similar to NCEA paragraph structure, personal responses require students to share a critical opinion, which is supported with evidence from the text. This strengthens their opinion, and it also demonstrates that the students have viewed the text.
Some sentences starters for NCEA personal responses can include:
After reading this text, I have discovered that I appreciate...
When I first found out what happened to the main character, it made me appreciate...
I was taken back when I read this had happened, this is before I have never experienced...
I found this particular text impactful, because I resonate with...
At first, I believed... but after reading this novel and putting some thought into the ideals from the text, I changed my mind and now I feel that...
It is with regret that I found myself at the end of this book series because...
I connect the most with... because they reminded me of myself/someone I know/someone I wish I hope to become...
When [character's name] made the decision to... it made me realise the level of sacrifice one must do when...
