The Unfamiliar Text exam is a common exam that students struggle with.
I think it is personally because many go in only knowing what language features are, and then they panic once they see the Unfamiliar Text questions. But unless you've learned the ins and outs of the Unfamiliar Text, you may struggle. That's where I come in!

What do you have to do for the Unfamiliar Text exam?
You have to analyse a few texts that you haven't studied before, hence the word "Unfamiliar".
"Text" means poems, advertisements, articles, non-fiction and prose.
To analyse the text, you'll need to discuss the language features used in the text, such as punctuation, structure, similes, metaphors, repetition and why they were used.
In other words, you should ask yourself:
What is the language feature?
Where do you see the language feature?
Why do you think the writer choose to use it?
What were they communicating through the language feature?
Why was it effective?
