We have been "in the teaching game" for many years and have had leadership roles in our retrospective schools, so when I mean that we are experts, I meant it! For me, I have been teaching for over 12 years in a variety of Waikato/Waipa/Auckland high schools, and have taught NCEA English, NCEA Drama and/or NCEA Dance.
So, I can say with confidence that I am an expert in these subjects and know the ins and outs of each NCEA assessment.
Here is the NCEA English assessment I will be covering in this blog:
#1: NCEA ENGLISH Close reading Film/Oral text
#1: NCEA ENGLISH Close reading Film/Oral text
This assessment requires NCEA students to jump into the eye of the director or writer. In particular with the NCEA Close reading Film component, NCEA students will need to look at things like character, relationships, plot, setting, themes, as well as film technologies. This assessment moves in parallel to the NCEA visual text external exam, where students will discuss in depth a moment, character, relationship, and/or setting in typical NCEA formal writing structure.
Similar to NCEA paragraph structure, the film analysis requires students to share a critical opinion, which is supported with evidence from the text. This strengthens their opinion, they understand the directing choices, and it also demonstrates that the students have viewed the text.
It is common practice for students to build up a chart with evidence from the film. This evidence would commonly include quotes/dialogue, as well as note/descriptions/details about characters, relationships, setting, camera shots, camera angles, music, SFX. It is also common for teachers to choose up to 3 scenes and carefully analyse them, so students are capable of understanding directing choices. Their final opinions and understandings will likely be developed into an essay to showcase what they have learned, along with material gathered during this assessment to help support their understandings, such as worksheet where the student identify what kinds of camera angles and shots are used and why.
I would encourage students to re-use the collated notes for NCEA exam study notes.
Some Film technologies to discuss can include:
Costume
Prop
Set
Make up
Lighting
Camera angles
Camera shots
Dialogue
SFX
Music
Oral text technologies to discuss can include:
Voice, body, movement and space choices for delivery and performance aspects
Use of technologies to enhance or support the message being delivered
Language features and other sound speech/oral presentation features
Writing style and performance style (purpose to entertain, inform or persuade)
Slang, colloquialisms and jargon audience demographic vs speaker's demographic
